Reading is such an important part of second grade. The students will improve their fluency and comprehension skills by reading a variety of texts every day! For our reading program we have a Basal series that we read stories from, a variety of plays that the students perform throughout the year, class sets of books, Book Clubs, and leveled readers from Reading A to Z. We incorporate all of these into our reading curriculum. This provides the students with an opportunity to read a wide variety of fictional and nonfictional texts. Often times the books that the students are reading will relate to the topics we are learning about in Social Studies and Science.
The students are expected to read every night for homework to continue to build upon the reading skills we are working on in school. Beginning in October students will record the amount of time that they read each night on a Book-it Calendar. This will count as part of the students' reading grades. They will also be able to earn a free Pizza Hut pizza. :)
The students will also use the Accelerated Reader program. Students are able to read books at home and then take comprehension tests at school. You can access the website and search through thousands of books to find ones "just right" for your child. You are able to search by your child's reading level, author, or topic. The students will be required to take AR tests as part of their reading grade also. More information about this will come home soon. Your child is able to start taking tests at any time though! :)
