In second grade the students will be practicing their math skills through three different programs. Each day at school we will work on a lesson in the Go Math series. We will complete the lesson as a class. Then the students will have an opportunity to practice the skill that has been taught that day. This helps me to see how well they understood the concept and if they need extra help. Your child will bring home the graded worksheet each night so you can see what we worked on in school. You can also access Go Math at home by clicking on the button below. This will allow you to see what we practiced in school. Your login information will be provided to you very soon by the school. Your child can practice skills that we have been learning in class at home on your computer! :)
The strategies used in Go Math can sometimes be different from the way that parents are used to solving problems. If you ever have trouble understanding the strategies your child is using on the worksheets please don't hesitate to ask me. It can be can be confusing at times! We are teaching the students a variety of different strategies and then they will be able to choose the ones that work best for them.
Each day in class your child will also practice addition or subtraction facts through a "Mad Minute". I will time the students for 1 minute. They will complete as many math facts as they can in this amount of time. I do not expect them to complete them all. The goal is that each day they will get a little faster. This helps them to master the facts, and not have to rely on counting on their fingers or a number line. We want them to be proficient in their facts because it will help them through third grade and beyond. We will correct the problems together. The students will write in the answers with a red pen. For homework, they will complete the other side of the fact sheet. Later in the year the students will have fact tests on Fridays, but they will have 3 minutes to complete the problems.
For homework each night your child will also have a lesson in the Simple Solutions math book. This series has the students practicing a variety of skills each day. This is a great way to help the students to continue to practice skills taught earlier in the year.
